Appin Road trail

A small group of four snowshoed the trail in Appin Road this morning.
Sunny at a cool -14 and fresh snow.

We were on the return trip in this photo and the return was mostly upgrade which for a good workout. I was to Warren Grove this evening for cards.

Cold winter day

Not a cloud in the sky at -11, the wind chill was -20 or more. There was a ground drift blowing the snow around.

Some small drifts of snow starting to form along the hedge row.

The trees along this section of the trail were clean, the snow must have blown off.
I was out on the snow shoes for a hour.

Winter birds

Do you see a couple birds in the trees, I guessing that they are Cedar Waxwings.

In total there was a dozen or more. I was out on the snowshoes for a hour or more.
There was at least four of my neighbors out on snowshoes as well.
It was -8 mid afternoon. It is -11 as I post this.

We had about 20 cm of snow with some rain mixed in so the snow is really staying on the trees.
I had to use the blower to clear the driveway, because of the rain it was hard snow to move.
At home this evening watching the mens junior curling.

This spring is the headwater for one of the streams near home, I have never seen it freeze over.

Looking down stream from the same location, amazing how green the vegetation stays.
I was out hiking near home for a hour in the afternoon, light rain at +5.

This is the little creek near home, all frozen over with a little snow on top.
As I post this, temp is -2 and we had 3-4 cm of snow.

Charlottetown harbour

The marina is bare looking without any boats, the hotel is the Delta.

Looking towards the Hillsborough bridge, there is still open water.

There is still working going on at the site of the Jack Frost event.
I was cycling for a couple hours after lunch, it was sunny at +2.
I donated plasma in the morning and this evening took part in a moonlight snowshoeing event at Brookvale.

I cycled into Charlottetown and then out the Confederation trail to the bypass.
The Jack Frost winter event is being held behind the Charlottetown mall, this looks like the sledding ramps.
The main part of it is near the Mount Edward road. It was mostly sunny at zero when I was cycling.

Boughton River

We hiked the Boughton River trail this morning, about 8.5 km. Sunny at -10.

The river is frozen over and some snowmobile tracks on it.

Some of the group, there was 11 of us in the group.

I was at the end of the trail at this point, the river is very wide here and it would be tidal.

The forcast was for sun and it peeked out a few times but it was mostly cloudy. By late afternoon temp was -5.

I was out for two hours on the skis in the afternoon and to Warren Grove to play cards this evening.

Winter fun

I was out on the skis this afternoon, a couple were on a snowmobile enjoying the snow as well.

This little hill is about one km from home, this is looking down.

A very gentle slope to practice on, I was up and down about ten times without falling down.
Temp was zero and the sun was trying to peek out but never made it.

I am guessing a fox has taken the wasp nest apart, I wouldn't think there would be much in it to eat.
Just the shell left on the tree.

Ii was -9 and sunny and not a cloud in the sky when I was out on the snowshoes for a hour, there were others out before me. Presently -18 as I post this.

Wood lot demo in Hazel Groce

This morning I was at the Wood lot Demo in Hazel Grove, This display was about birds of raptor on PEI.

This team of Belgian horse were giving sled rides, light snow at the time and -10.

Later in the morning I went out on the snowshoes for 30 minutes, there were other snowshoers out before me by the tracks in the snow.

Dunk river

This is near where the beaver dam is located and is the Dunk river.

This is the beaver dam and pond, at the top of the photo is the Confederation trail.
Snow flurries most of the day with a high of -4. I was curling this morning, first time this season.

Winter wonderland

I was the first one on this trail this afternoon, we had 15 cm of snow and very little wind so the snow is still on the trees. I used the blower on the drive in morning.

As you can see from the tracks, I was on skis, first time this season that there was enough snow for skiing. Mostly overcast at -4. The groundhog did not get to see his shadow.

Breadalbane

Light snow at -8 when we hiked the Breadalbane trail this morning, about 6 km.

Some of the group as we started, there was 10 of us in the group.

The trail follows the Dunk river on one side and comes back on the other side and is close to the Confederation Trail on the north side. As I post this, the snow fall has totaled about 15 cm.

A bright sunny day at -9, a four wheeler and a few people had being on the trail.

I was for a 75 minute walk, this field had soybeans in it, the stubble is short but not enough snow to cover the stubble.

A little farther away is a ploughed field and again not enough snow to cover the sods.
Normally by now there would be lots of snowmobiles in this area.
I played cards this evening in Warren Grove.

Of Ice and ducks

This is at Ellen creek at low tide, a lot of ducks enjoying the open water. I was out cycling for a couple hours, mostly sunny at +1

The Charlottetown harbour as seen from Victoria Park, again a lot of open water. Usually by this time of year there would ice fishing shacks on the ice, but none yet this year.

This is the North river on the north side of the bridge, again many ducks and open water.

A nice sunny day at +2, just a few puffy clouds around.

I was out walking for 90 minutes, although there is a lot of people walk in the woods area, I have only seen tracks of one other person this far from home, so I have crossed this field many time in the last couple months.

Official sunset today was 5:10, and this photo taken at 5:10 but it was still bright at 5:30 PM.

We had snow then rain last night. I used the blower to clear the driveway, snow was very wet.
It was between 7:30 and 8:00 when I took this photos of the clouds.

The sun was hitting the edges of the clouds. The temp was +1 but later dropped to -2.

I was for a hour long walk mid afternoon, GPS indicated that I walked 3 km. The snow was crusted but you broke though it as you stepped on it. This photo taken around 4:00 and the sun was peeking out in places. I was to Hampshire to play cards.

Cycling day

It was overcast at -4 when I went cycling this morning, the forecast was for snow after lunch.
This art piece is located at the Farmers Market.

The trail in the Charlottetown area was bare like as in the summer. I went as far as the Sherwood road on the trail but then it was icy so I went to the streets. I logged 30 km by the time I got home. The snow didn't start until 4:00 and then just a very light dusting.

Dalvay trails

Today the hiking group went to Dalvay and walked these two trails, about 5 km total.

This is the bubbling spring on the bubbling spring trail, there is enough heat in the water so that it never freezes.

This stone wall is around a old cemetery, there was light snow at -7 at the time we were on the trail. There was some sunny breaks later in the day.

Cycling day

It was sunny at +4 when I went cycling, The river is icing over, the open is just around the bridge area.

There is ducks enjoying the open water at the bridge.

This photo was taken from Victoria park, some ice drifting around the Charlottetown harbour.
Before I got home the clouds moved in and the temp dropped to +2 when I got home at 3:30 PM, I logged 30 km around the city, all on streets or roads.

Mild weather

About 15 mm of rain this morning and the temp is up to +6. Lots of water flowing in the creek, almost touching the foot bridge.

The flow of water is like what I would see in the spring thaws.

The field is almost snow free, still some frost in the ground. It still is +6 as I post this at 9:07

In was sunny in morning at -10, by the afternoon the clouds were coming and you see the edge of the front. By 4:00 PM it was up to -3.

I went for a walk in the afternoon, I went to the business park, The government sand pile for sanding the roads is getting very small.

Brookvale

I walked the trails at the Brookvale wood lot in the afternoon, took about a hour to complete the loop.

Fresh snow last night so I could tell that several people had walked the trail before me.
Full sun at -10. Near the wood lot is the Brookvale Ski park, lots of people making use of the hill and the staff were making more snow.

The fresh snow fell without much wind, so it stayed on the trees.

One of the trails though the field, by the tracks there were several people out on the fresh snow before me.

I was out cycling for a couple hours after lunch, this is the new Provincial Manor as seen from the main highway. It is located on the west side of Charlottetown.

This ducks are in Ellen creek next to the North River road.

The Confederation Trail near the Charlottetown mall is bare. There was some sun in morning, overcast at zero when I was cycling, a hour after I got home it started to snow, forecast is for 5 cm.

It was -10 when the hiking group started walking the Winter River trail.

There is a fair flow of water at this point in the river. After lunch I was to the wood lot for a couple hours.

Of Ice and ducks

30 minutes later the sky had clouded over, we still have very little snow on the ground.

The sun is rising a little earlier each day.

Some ice gathering in the North River, this is looking south from the bridge.

Later in the day looking north from the bridge. I was to Montague in the morning.
At 2:30 I went cycling into Charlottetown and to Cornwall, I got home at 4:30 and it was -3.
The day was mostly sunny but a strong wind out of the west.
I was to Hampshire in evening to play cards. Now to watch some curling.

A few cm of fresh snow overnight, +5 when I went for a walk in the afternoon. I went by where the bees nest is located.

Something has opened it up on one side, I am thinking a bird of some type, maybe a crow.

Not enough snow for snowmobiles but a four wheeler had made a couple passes.
I attended a trail meeting in morning and when for a at 3:00, I was out for a hour and the temp was up to -5. Forecast is for snow tonight and rain tomorrow.

This is the walking trail near the sand pile in the Cornwall business park.
Late afternoon I was out for a 60 minute walk and walked as far as the sand pile.

The sky is gray, no sign of the sun, there was a light dusting of snow this morning, the temp did get upto +1.

Tracks in snow

I found these tracks on the trail to the business park in the fresh snow, I believe they are fox tracks. It was -10 when I was out walking for 90 minutes.

It was a nice sunny afternoon with very light wind, the fox had gone the whole length on the trail.
I took the trail right to the base of the water tower which is located on the west side of the business park. Just a couple cm of snow, no need for snow shoes.

Beck trail

I was hiking the Beck trail this morning, it is near Murray River. We did the red loop, about 4.5 km. It was mostly sunny at -5 when on the trail.

This old building was near the trailhead, it was named the wood shed.

Although there was snow in the air all day, there was only 1-2 cm total on the ground.

Winter cycling

After lunch I cycled to York and back home logging 34 km. it was -2 when I go home at 3:00.
No snow anywhere, but the trail was rough in places due to frost heaving it.

This was taken at 9 AM, a few breaks in the clouds, by 10 AM it was raining and rained til mid afternoon.

I went for a walk after 4 PM , the temp was +8, I walked though the woods to the business park, the sun was breaking though the clouds again.

The Cornwall water tower is silhouetted by the setting sun. I was walking for 30 minutes.

More cycling

This morning before the rain started, I cycled to the Mall, then took the trail to Winsloe and then home logging 23 km for the trip. Temp was at zero. Light snow in the Royalty area, a few people had been out walking and there was one cyclist out before me.

Not as much snow as I got near to Winsloe, because on the gravel, it is good cycling even where there is snow.

This section almost like summer. So the cycling is over for this year and I have logged 5,450 km for the year.

I went for a walk mid afternoon, this is a few soybeans that were missed by the combine.

There were still a lot of clouds in the sky. At the time I was walking, -7 with a wind chill of -17, very windy as well, gusting to 60 km/h.

A nice flow of water in the stream today, this was in the morning, it has rained all afternoon so there will be more water by now.

The sun was almost peeking out for a few minutes, very windy today, gusts to 70 km/h

The trees are clear of snow but still a fair covering of snow on the ground, the high was +8 and with the wind & rain most of the snow is gone.

This trail along the edge of the woods was busy, It looked to me as one snowmobile , two people on snowshoes and one hiker had used it before me.

I had walked this section on the 24th, but I would say that it has not being used since.
Before I got home a strap broke on the snowshoe so I need to make some repairs.

This photo was taken mid morning, we had about 5 cm of snow by then.

This was mid afternoon and close to 10 cm of snow, lucky there was no wind.

The snow was sticking right on the trees, there was concern that we might not have snow for Christmas, but with the cold temps for tomorrow we will have snow on Christmas.
The temp was around zero all day so the snow is very wet and sticking to everything.

I was at family Christmas dinner and an inlaw that operates a welding shop was showing a wood splitter that he built.

He made a very professional job of it.
Rain all day at 3. It was light rain in afternoon when I was putting up the outside Christmas decorations.

New house

Christmas tree

I donated plasma this morning and spend the afternoon putting lights on the tree. Not finished, about 80% done. Heavy rain at times this morning at a high of 14. The rain stopped in the afternoon but the wind picked up, 60 gusting to 85 km/h in Charlottetown. On the Confederation bridge it was gusting to 150 km/h and the bridge was closed to all traffic for 90 minutes.
The temp now is only zero with a forecast low of -4 overnight.

Trees

Cycling group

The Monday cycling ride now starts at 2:30, counting myself there were eight in the ride today.
We cycling to Suffolk and back as a group, about 25 km. I cycled from home to the starting point in Charlottetown so I had 40 km by the time I got home.

As I was coming home the sun was setting over the North River. It was overcast for the day with a high of 10 and a very light wind.

Victoria Park

It was sunny at 5 with some nice puffy clouds, and some what breezy.
This afternoon I cycled into the Victoria park in Charlottetown.

It was windy enough to bring some sea gulls into rest on the lawn.

This display was on the grass near the cannons.
After leaving the park I cycled to the trail head on Grafton street and then cycled the trail to Milton and then took Rte 248 home, about 35 km for the afternoon.

Beach

This is the shore line of the North River near the point where in joins the West River.

Looking across the river you can see Charlottetown.
Mostly overcast at 6. I was to the wood lot this afternoon but only got about a hour of work in when the throttle cable on the saw broke. I was able to get one at the dealer and I have replaced it. The cost wasn't too bad, only $9.00.

I spend a few hours in the wood lot today, this is what it looks like before I get at it.

There is more work to the fir than doing the pine, fir branches are smaller but a lot more of them.

Winter berries

Not sure what these berries are called, some one said dog berries.

These were growing in the Mount Stewart area, and in marshy locations.

This photo of te trail is in the Tracadie Cross area. This afternoon with another TO I cycled from Cherry Hill to Winsloe on the trail, about 35 km. It was sunny when we started but then the cloud moved in, temp was 6 with a light wind. I was to Warren Grove this evening to play cards.

This afternoon I took a walk in the ball field woods, the little foot bridge is still in good shape.

This field is on the other side of the woods, the 20 cm of snow we had last week is just a memory.
I visited the neighbors this morning and attended a wake in the evening.
Overcast all day with rain in late afternoon at a high of 12.
Yesterday I was to Montague visiting and did not get any photos, so I didn't do a posting.

I had breakfast with the retired firefighters this morning at the Trackside.

I spend a couple hours in the wood lot in late afternoon, still some snow in places. It was sunny at 3. I was to Hampshire to play cards this evening.

I was in Hampshire today, the snowmobiles have started using the trail, looks like the cycling is over for the season.

The 20 cm of snow that fell is still on the trees, high for the day was Zero and mostly cloudy.

I donated plasma this morning and took a walk in the fields back of the woods in late afternoon.

The snow started around 1:00 PM and by 6:00 there was 15 cm down with more coming, forecast is to change to rain after midnight. Photo taken around 6:00 PM.
I drove to Summerside after lunch, It was close to 4:00 when I drove home, a very slow drive because of the snow and traffic.

It was -7 overnight but up to -2 in afternoon, I spend three hours in wood lot.

This photo was taken around 3:30 in Hampshire, temp zero.

Another trail Officer and I cycled from Sherwood to Hampshire and back, about 30 km return.
It was down to -1.5 when I got home. I visited the neighbors this morning and then after lunch I helped put shavings in a chicken barn for a hour. I was to a wake in the evening, A lot of people there, I was 75 minutes getting though the line.

Mount Stewart

With another Trail Officer I cycled from Brackley to Morell this afternoon.
We stopped for a rest in Mt. Stewart where I took these photos. I am thinking the gun piece goes back to the first world war. It was sunny and 12 at noon, by 2:00 there was very light rain at 10. We cycled the last half in the rain. The weather person is forecasting light snow again for tomorrow.

I was to the wood lot for a couple of hours this afternoon, Temp was up to 7 so the snow on the trees was melting and made for wet working conditions. It was -2 this morning.

We had 2 cm of snow last night.

By 4:00 PM the sun was starting to peek though the clouds and the snow had mostly melted.
I took a 30 minute walk though the woods at 4:00.

Hunter River bridge

And the stream that runs under the bridge, I don't know for sure but I am guessing it is the Hunter River as it is the only one in the Village.

I cycled from Milton to Hazel Grove, it was sunny at 10 when I left Milton, but as I got to Hazel grove the clouds were moving in as a cold front approached.
I attended the Island Trails awards night this evening and got a Tip to Tip award for cycling the complete trail.

Red Oak tree

The Red Oak is the only tree that is still holding onto its leaves.
Mostly sunny with a high of 12. I was in the wood lot for the morning and attended a Island trails meeting at 4:00 which lasted 2 hours.

New Manor

New store

This is the new Sobey's store that is being built near the Charlottetown mall.
This afternoon I cycled from home to the Charlottetown mall, then cycled the trail to Bedford and the back to Charlottetown and then took the road home. I logged 45 km for the trip.
A good day foe cycling at 15, cloudy and somewhat windy.

5,000 km

I drove to Fredericton and then cycled to Kinkora, a nice sunny day a 10 with light wind, the wind generators in Kinkora were not turning.

This part of the trail is east of Emerald, still nice colour to the leaves.
On the ride today the odometer went passed the 5,000 km for the 2011 season.

Wood land trails

This afternoon I took a walk though the woods by the ball field.

There was a few trees that had blown down, so I had the chain saw with me and cleared the trail.

The saw is a small 35 cc one with a 16" bar.
Sunny, windy at a cool 4. I had breakfast with radio club members in morning and played cards in Hampshire this evening.

Beaver pond

These photos are of the beavers work in Breadalbane, these trees are on the north side of the trail, the pond is on the south so all the wood has to be moved across the trail.

This is the path from the trail to the pond, so they have made many trips on the path, the trail is about 4 - 5 meters higher than the pond.

The lodge is in the center of the pond behind the branches.
Rain all day, I am guessing 40+ mm, very windy in morning with a high of 16.
No cycling today.

It was a sunny day at 15, so with rain forecast for tomorrow the farmers were busy today. This is one of the three combines I saw today working in the soybean fields.

This beaver dam is in Breadalbane, this spring it seemed like the beavers had moved on, as the dam had opened and there was no pond. But they are back.
I cycled from Hampshire to Breadalbane and back this afternoon, about 45 km.

Confederation Trail

I cleaned off the garden and mowed the lawn this morning, then put the lawn mower away for the season. I got a ride to Cherry hill then with another TO cycled back to Winsloe, about 34 km.
Sunny with a high of 14 midafternoon. I was to the card play in warren Grove this evening.

Location Hampshire, couple cyclists on trail and a clean cut off on the edge of the cloud cover.

This was taken around 5:00 looking west over the North River with the setting sun illuminating the cloud bottoms. if you enlarge the photo, you can see a lot of black spots in the clouds, they are a column of crows winging there way to Victoria to roost.
I visited neighbors this morning, then to the wood lot for a couple of hours. I went cycling at 2:30 and back at dusk logging 43 km. Mostly sunny at a high of 10.

This wild apple tree still lots of apples on it, this section of the trail is located in Darlington.

This combine was working in a field of soybean, it appears to be half done, the field is in North Wiltshire. Sunny at 9 and windy today. I cycled Milton to Darlington and back, about 25 km.
I could have cycled more but wanted to get home to watch the World Cup Curling.

I spend the afternoon at the wood lot, this is what it looks like at the start.

I am cutting of the limbs up to about 2 meters. and any volunteer trees that are too close to others.
