Clear blue sky

Sunny at -12 with just a few clouds in the sky

There was some wind, enough to cause some ground drifting of the snow.

I think both coyote and fox tracks here, I believe the the foxes have a den some where in these piles of clay.
I visited with neighbors at the chicken barn in the morning, I was on the snow shoes for a hour this afternoon and this evening spend a hour helping unload a truck load of chickens

team of horses

I was asked about the breed of horse in this team, According to the hand out at the wood lot, they are Haflingers and always are chestnut in colour and make good light draft horses

sunrise on a winter day

By 7:45 sun was peeking out, temp -12

I went skiing at 1:00 for 90 minutes, temp was up to -5. This photo taken Cornwall side of the MacPhail woods.

A snowmobile had used the nature trail though the woods.
After the skiing I watched curling for the rest of the afternoon.

Wood lot demonstration horses

This fine looking was hauling logs out of the woods.

There was a team as well,

Also a display of animals showing what a beaver, coyote and a red fox looks like.
The wood lot demonstration was at the Buffalo road in Wheatley River. As well as the horses and animals, there was snowshoeing, chain saw tips, tapping maple trees and wood lot management.
-12 to start the day, got up to -2 and mostly overcast.
I spend the morning at the woodlot and was out on the skis for 90 minutes in the afternoon. Watching curling this evening.

Tracks in the fresh snow

I believe these are coyote tracks

These are snow shoes, one of three difference types that was out today.

A well traveled trail by snowshoers and a snowmobile track.

The eastern part of the island had more freezing rain yesterday.
Sunny with a high of -3, a very nice day for the end of January.
I used the snow blower to clear the walk and driveway this morning. I than was snow shoeing in the Mount Stewart area. Later in the afternoon I was out on the skis for a hour, the fresh snow made for good skiing.

Winter storm

I was on the snowshoes for a hour starting at 2:15. Lots of snow on the trees. At this time we had about 15 cm of snow.

I believe these tracks are by a dog as there was snowshoes tracks up ahead.

Hard to believe that there is open water after the week of cold weather, this is in the swamp area of the woods, must be a spring nearby.
At 3:00 the temp was up to zero and we had a period of freezing rain.
I donated plasma this morning and after I came home from snowshoeing, I used the snow blower for 30 minutes to clear the driveway.

Winter day

A little fresh snow this morning, no new tracks on the hill. It was -14 this morning, up to -4 while I was on the skis.

It was after 4:00 when I got out on the skis, I glided down this hill five times and was out for a hour. I was doing errands this morning and giving a neighbor a help after lunch. I attend a firefighters meeting this evening.

Coyote

A nice sunny afternoon at -14. I went on the snow shoes around 2:00 and saw this coyote over in the next field about 200 meters away.

I was not able to get closer, so zoomed in as much as I could with my camera.

The eastern sky just before sunrise looking across the river towards Charlottetown.

Cold day

-22 with a wind chill of -35 this morning, I went for a walk using the snow shoes at 4:00 and it was -18 with a wind chill of -28. It was 4:15 when I took the photo, official sunset today was 5:04.

Coyotes lunch

There seemed to be a gathering of coyotes at this spot in a field by the amount of tracks.

The close up shows that they were having lunch and all that was left is some white feathers, so I am not sure what kind of a bird it was.

This was a fair sized spruce tree that blew down in the recent wind storm.
It was -15 this morning, the high for the day was -7 but sunny with very light wind.
I was out on the snow shoes for a hour and then watched the skins curling at 2:00 and cheered Martin's team onto a win.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Cold day

I was out on the snowshoes for 40 minutes this afternoon, this photo is the west side of the ball field woods, the snow is off all trees in this area.

It was a sunny day at -8 and a breeze that was making it feel like -16. There was a couple people out snow shoeing ahead of me, I was chatting to one. Watching curling skin games today.

Winter scenes

This photo taken Tuesday, it is the larger hill that I ski on.

This was taken a few day ago, a farm field with the buildings and the water tower in the background.
There was sunny breaks around noon, snow started mid afternoon, about 5 cm. Presently light rain at +1 but very windy, overnight forecast 60gusting to 80 km/h.
Visited friends in Stratford this morning, after lunch changed oil in the car and at 4:00 I went out on snowshoes for 40 minutes. Stayed home tonight.

Squirrel had lunch

Looks a squirrel was busy having lunch in the tree above this spot, this is fresh as we had light snow last night.

Snow shoe tracks in the snow on trail in wood lot.

Still lots of snow on the trees, I would have thought the rain yesterday would have cleaned it all off.
Cloudy with a couple of sunny breaks in the afternoon, high was around -4
After lunch I was to the wood lot and the in late afternoon I was out the skis for 30 minutes.

Brookvale woods

This photo taken yesterday at the wood lot in Brookvale.
20+ mm of rain with a temp of 3. A little snow forecast for tonight, about 2-3 cm. But it is windy, 50 gusting to 70 here in Charlottetown, The Confederation bridge is closed to all traffic, so it is very windy in Borden-Carleton. I spend a extra 40 minutes on the exercise bike because of not getting outside.

Snow shoeing

It was -18 overnight and still at -15 when we started the hike at 9:20.

There were 15 people that turned out to go snow shoeing at Brookvale.

After lunch I went out on the skis and I believe this is where a fox dug out a meal, probably
a field mouse.

I was out out skis for about 80 minutes starting at 2:30, again it was a good day for the skis, and it had warmed up to -5. I was at Warren Grove this evening for cards.

Tracks in snow

I believe that these fresh tracks in the snow are from a coyote.

As you can see in this photo, the coyote was taking advantage of the old snowmobile track for easier walking. Note the clear blue sky with just a few fluffy clouds.

It was -12 overnight but with the sun in the afternoon it was only -8, with a light wind it was a perfect day for the skis. I was out for 80 minutes and made four trips down this little hill.

Bridge crossing

Since I crossed here yesterday a snowmobile used the trail though the woods to the ball field, but it didn't use the bridge.

Sunny breaks at -7. I watched curling in afternoon and at 4:45 I when out on the snow shoes for 45 minutes. We got about 5-7 cm of snow this morning, so with the new snow & the -7 it was good conditions for snow shoes. I plan on watching curling later tonight.

Saturday, January 15, 2011

A very nice sunny afternoon at a high of -5, I was out on the skis in the late afternoon.
A show shoers tracks along the hedge row.

The wax on the skis was just right as I skied down this track four times and came back up the same tracks and had no back sliding on the skis at all.

There were a few clouds in the sky as the sun was setting, official sun set today was around 4:55.
I played cards in Hampshire this evening and will watch the first part of the curling that comes on at 10:30

Sunset

I went out on the skis around 3:00 and the sun was trying to break out, this photo taken about 3:30.
This was taken about 40 minutes later.

The sun was finally breaking out as it was setting, I think the official sun set is near 5:00 PM.
It was overcast at a temp of zero. I watched continental cup curling again today and was out on the skis for 100 minutes.

Water tower

A close up of the water tower in Cornwall

A view of the T&PW sand pile in the Cornwall Business Park.
we had 20+ cm of snow last night with light wind, so no drifting. Some light rain at 1 and the winds were higher this afternoon, gusting to 50km/h.
I spend a hour with the blower clearing the drive this morning. At noon I watched the Continental Cup curling. I then went for a 90 minutes walk on the snow shoes to the Cornwall Business Park. There was two other persons out the snow shoes before me. Then at 4:30 I watched so more Continental cup curling. The third draw for the day goes at 10:30 PM so I may not see all of it.
