Old cattails

Sunny at -5 when I was out on the snowshoes, these cattails all holding up very well.

The weather doesn't seem to have hurt this one.

A lone set of ski tracks across this field, there was a couple sets of fresh snowshoe tracks as well on the trail that I was snowshoeing on.

clouds

This was taken about 6:00 on the way home from Charlottetown. I spend most of the afternoon at a meeting. Snowed all morning, used the blower to clear the driveway at noon.

The flash was on when I took this photo, it caused the snow flakes to be seen.
I am guessing about 15 cm on snow at -6, there was some wind during the afternoon to cause drifting.

Headspring water temp

I walked to the spring at the head of a stream that never freezes. The air temp was -9, I put the thermometer in the water for a couple minutes.

The water temp was almost +9, the reading started dropping as soon as I took it out but it was still above 8 when I got the photo.

These snowshoe tracks are mine that I made on Saturday, no need for snowshoes today. The snow was crusted enough to walk on just with boots.

Clouds & ice

This photo taken around 8:00 AM when I was out for the morning coffee.

Sunny breaks at zero and windy, NW at 40 gusting to 55 km/h. About 2:00 PM I went cycling.
This photo is Ellen creek, the channel has started to open in the ice.

This was taken in Cornwall as I was getting home from cycling, the wind had dropped down to 20 gusting to 35 km/h which was strong enough when cycling into the wind. Chill factor would be about -8. I logged 30 km for the ride. I watched the Alberta women's curling team win the Scotties bonspiel this evening.

Clouds

After lunch I was out on the snow shoes for a hour, one other person was on this trail before me.
Very windy at a temp of +4, some sunny breaks.

The clouds were moving rapidity, with sharp edges.

I was to Hampshire this evening for cards and now watching the end of the curling.

Sunset

The setting sun over Cornwall, the water tower is behind a tree. There were sunny breaks at +2

The sun is setting later each day, this was taken at 6:24 PM in a parking lot in Charlottetown.
I spend the day in Montague visiting, so no cycling today.

Victoria Park

It was overcast at +5 when I was cycling, a fair wind as well, see the flag. This is the viewing stand at the Victoria park at the cannons.

The harbour as seen from the viewing stand, looks like full ice cover now.

The parkway is wet with puddles from the melting snow. The old bike is taking a beating from the salt that is on the streets. After leaving the park, I cycled the snow covered trail to the bypas and the highway to Winsloe, then home logging 30+ km for the trip.
I was curling in the morning. And yes Cocoa, we won.

Callaghan Road trail

I was snowshoeing on the Callaghan road trail this morning, overcast at Zero. The snow is not removed on this part of the road.

Many open fields in this area and a good cover of snow on them.
There were 10 in the group today and we were out for about two hours.

Not sure of the name for this stream, but it runs though Green Bay and that may be what it is called. A good sized stream with a lot of water flowing. I expect that there is good fishing in it.
I am still watching a lot of curling from the bonspiel in Red Deer.

Winter cycling

The open water at the North River bridge on north side ia at low tide.

Both ducks and sea gulls taking advantage of the low tide and open water.

The confederation trail in Charlottetown is covered with packed snow, it wasn't too bad to cycle on, a little rough in places from the footprints in the frozen snow.
It was sunny at -5 and I cycled around Charlottetown and took the trail out to the bypass highway and the road home logging 29 km.

skiing

The trail though the woods near Eliot Park, It was overcast at -5.

The trail along the edge of the field on the Cornwall side of the woods.
The ski tracks are from someone else that was out before me.

Lots of snow in the fields now, covering the stubble and whatever else that maybe there.
I was on the skis for about 75 minutes and guessing about 7-8 km traveled.

Winter day

-2 and a clear sky, not a cloud to be seen. I was out on the skis for 75 minutes. there was someone on snowshoes on the trail before me to this point.

But they turned back, not a track on the fresh snow ahead of me.

I skied to Eliot park, there were snowmobiles in this area and one other person out on skis as seen by these ski tracks. I watched one draw of curking before skiing and another draw after I got back.

Winter wonderland

Last night and this morning about 20 cm of snow, just at the freezing point with no wind so the snow was staying on everything.

I had to clear the driveway twice, most of the snow had fell by noon.
This evening I was watching the women's curling from Red Deer.

Cycling around Charlottetown

This photo was taken from Victoria park looking towards the West River, the harbour is fully covered with ice. Some sunny breaks at zero.

I cycled the trail from Longworth Ave. to the bypass, it was actually muddy in places were the snow had melted off. This was behind the Charlottetown mall.

Still a fair amount of open water north of the bridge at the North River, still some ducks staying around the open water. I logged 29 km for the trip.

Curling

There are four sheets of ice to curl on in this rink. I was curling on ice 4.

This game on ice 2 was just finishing when I took the photo. I was at the Cornwall rink.

It was +1 and partly sunny when I went out on the snowshoes for a hour. This trail had being used today by a snowmobile, a skier and someone on snowshoes before I came along.

Strathgartney park trail

This morning there were 9 in the group of snowshoers that hiked the Strathgartney trail along the Bonshaw river. In this area we were breaking fresh trail in the snow.

The Bonshaw rive is fully iced over in this area, a way back on the hill you can see the CBC TV tower.
The river is tidal in this area and the ice cracks in places as the tide comes in and goes out again.
It was a perfect morning with no wind, sunny at zero temp. by late afternoon it was +7 but we finished hiking by 11:15 AM. The afternoon was like a spring day so I washed the car, it needed it because of all the road salt on it.

Appin Road trail

A small group of four snowshoed the trail in Appin Road this morning.
Sunny at a cool -14 and fresh snow.

We were on the return trip in this photo and the return was mostly upgrade which for a good workout. I was to Warren Grove this evening for cards.

Monday, February 13, 2012

Cold winter day

Not a cloud in the sky at -11, the wind chill was -20 or more. There was a ground drift blowing the snow around.

Some small drifts of snow starting to form along the hedge row.

The trees along this section of the trail were clean, the snow must have blown off.
I was out on the snow shoes for a hour.

Winter birds

Do you see a couple birds in the trees, I guessing that they are Cedar Waxwings.

In total there was a dozen or more. I was out on the snowshoes for a hour or more.
There was at least four of my neighbors out on snowshoes as well.
It was -8 mid afternoon. It is -11 as I post this.

We had about 20 cm of snow with some rain mixed in so the snow is really staying on the trees.
I had to use the blower to clear the driveway, because of the rain it was hard snow to move.
At home this evening watching the mens junior curling.
