What happen to the tree

 It was late in the day when I went out on the snowshoes, I was in the woods near the business park when I saw all this bark on the snow.

 The bits of bark were off the spruce tree that appears to be dieing.  My guess is that a woodpecker was having lunch by looking for grubs under the bark.

Sunny at -10 with a light wind, however it was down to -14 when I came in from the snowshoeing.
